Sustainability

Here at Blackflag Brewing, we’re committed to doing things sustainably and minimising the impact we might have on our stunning Sunshine Coast home.

Here’s just some of the ways we put that commitment into action...

Reusable Pallet Wraps

Did you know that over five million tonnes of plastic pallet wrap is used around the world every year? Apparently this is enough plastic to wrap around the Earth 16,500 times!

So to do our bit, we’ve teamed up with the legends at Bearhug Pallet Wraps, an Australian owned business that makes these awesome reusable pallet wraps. In fact, we’re the first brewery in Queensland to start using reusable wraps on deliveries to external distributors with the support of both Bearhug and our friends at Motus Transport. Every pallet we send out means another 350g of single use plastic eliminated.

Energy Efficient Brewing

When we brew, we start with a big tank full of hot water. Think of it like a giant kettle. We add milled grain and boil it for a bit to extract all the sugars from the malt, making a sweet liquid we call wort. After the brewing process is done, that wort is then run through a heat exchanger to drop the temperature down by around 70 degrees.

Now here’s the clever part. Instead of using a lot of electricity to reheat a whole new giant kettle of water for the next brew, we use the heat exchanger to transfer the heat from the outgoing wort into clean water for the next batch. Nice!

That’s just one of a whole bunch of efficiency measures implemented throughout the brewing process.

Cows!

Speaking of grain, we use about two tonnes of the stuff every week. Beer malt is mostly malted barley, and after the brewing process is done, our hardworking brewers clean all of the “spent grain” out of the tanks and into big IBC containers. It kind of looks like a thick porridge at that point.

But fear not, that big tank of grain doesn’t go to waste. We work with local farmers who come and take it off our hands at no cost, so that they can feed it to their cattle! There’s still loads of good stuff in those grains and they’re actually a healthy treat for the cows as we’ve removed a lot of the sugars, which prevents bloating.

We even got a wonderful call not long back from one of those farmers, who was going through tough times in a drought period, and told us that without that grain, many of their drought stricken calves wouldn’t have made it. And we reckon that’s pretty awesome.

...and more to come.

We’re always looking for ways to brew beer, distribute our products, and run our venues efficiently and with minimal impact on the environment. Stay tuned as we continue to develop further initiatives with this in mind.
